Grow Ginger on Your Windowsill

14 February 2008

Ginger RootGrowing herbs on your windowsill in the winter helps to brighten your mood and gives you the great taste and aroma of freshly picked herbs. Have you ever thought about growing a spice on your windowsill? Well ginger is the perfect spice to start with. Easy to grow and attractive you will have a flourishing plant in a few months.

Find a large firm gingerroot at the grocery store and cut a small 2-inch piece off. Make sure there is an eye (similar to one on a potato). You can use the rest in cooking or to add to your herbal tea. Fill a 4-inch pot with potting soil or compost and bury the ginger one-inch below the soil level with the cut side down. Water well, place in a warm sunny window and keep the pot moist. It will take a little while for the root to sprout, but be patient. It will take about a month for the first sprout to appear. Your patience will be rewarded with smooth very soft leaves that have a lovely fruity smell. Happy growing. :-)
